Hanging adjustable shelves with EZ anchors and installing fixed shelving

Hanging shelves on the wall is a common project that provides useful and decorative functions. Installing adjustable shelf standards is an inexpensive solution for storage and organizational problems.

Watch the attached video, draw a sketch, make a plan and take your time. Don't worry about mistakes; you can always fill in the hole and drill another one. You will be happy with the job and it will look great.

Tools needed: drill, screwdriver, stud finder, level.

Materials required: shelving - adjustable, shelving - fixed, easy anchors, screws.

For the fixed shelf, use reinforced shelf brackets screwed directly into the studs for the heavy desk top. The trick is ensuring the shelf is level, so be patient using the bubble level: measure twice and drill once.

The adjustable shelving usually requires shelf standards 18" apart, but keeping the first and last standard about 6" inside from each end.

Choose the position of the lowest shelf, then purchase standards that are 16" from the ceiling. The standards come in lengths of 12" increments, with 24, 36, 48, 60, 72-inches easily available.

And they come in colors and metal finishes.

Mark the top of the first standard and lay out the spacing for the rest at the top screw holes.

Now use the level to mark all the top holes of the standards.

Use an E-Z anchor if you are working on drywall and the stud doesn't fall where a standard must be. Install the top screw and hang the standard loosely. It will act as a plumb-bob so the rest of the holes on the standard can be marked nice and level.

Install the rest of the screws, and hang the brackets and shelves.
